Begum Rokeya Day is an official national day celebrated in Bangladesh. Bengali writer, educationist, commemorating the contribution of Begum Rokeya, a pioneer of women's awakening in Bangladesh, her birth and death day, December 9, is celebrated as "Rokeya Day". The day is celebrated in different schools, colleges, and universities of Bangladesh at the initiative of the government. On this day, the government of Bangladesh awarded Begum Rokeya Medal to women who have contributed in various fields. The Bengali nation will always remember this majestic woman who has always struggled to free her from the shackles of religious orthodoxy and superstition. Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain was a renowned Bengali writer, educator, and social reformer of the nineteenth century. Sakhawat Hossain was her husband's name. She was titled Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain after she got married to him. Rokeya was born on 9 December 1880 in a zamindar family at Payrabandha in Rangpur. She died on this day in 1932. Born into a conservative Muslim family, she kept a key role in women's awakening. This is why this day is celebrated as Rokeya Day. Initiatives were taken to celebrate Begum Rokeya Day and award Begum Rokeya Medal-2019 at the initiative of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs. On the occasion of the day, President Mohammad Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina conveyed separate messages.Various governmental and non-governmental organizations carry out detailed programs to observe Begum Rokeya Day with proper dignity. On the occasion of the day, various programs are taken under government management in her birthplace Payrabandha in Rangpur. Apart from this, various organizations including Rokeya Hall and Bangla Academy of Dhaka University carry out detailed programs.Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain fought for equal rights of women in the state, society, and family system all through her life. She exposed religious orthodoxy, superstition, and the captivity of women by razor-sharp writing in her ageless books like Matichur, Sultanar Swapno, Padmarag, Abrodhabasini, etc.
Besides, she struggled against the unfair treatment of women including child marriage, and dowry. It is known that on the occasion of Begum Rokeya's birth and death day on December 9, the people of Payraband have been observing Rokeya Day since 1974. The day has been officially observed since 1994. Notable works of Begum Rokeya, a renowned Bengali writer and social reformer of the nineteenth century, are Pipasa (1902), Matichur (1904), Sultana's Dream (1906), Saugat (1918), Padmarag (1924), and Aborodhabasini (1931).Writer: Nazeeb Alam
