Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Sivasu for short) is a specialized government university in Bangladesh. It is the only veterinary university in the country. However, it is considered an agricultural university and like other agricultural universities, it also confers degrees on the faculty. Sivasu created Bangladesh's first animal blood bank. Sivasu created Bangladesh's first abdominal hospital, the first physiology museum.

History

Chittagong Government Veterinary College was established in 1995-96 to produce skilled and up-to-date veterinarians. The institute started its journey in January 1997 with 50 students under the Faculty of Science, University of Chittagong. Later, the government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh decided to convert Chittagong Government Veterinary College into a university. Following this, the then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia inaugurated it on February 2, 2006, as Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. It was later launched on August 7, 2006, through an ordinance. At first, the university only started its journey with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. At present, the university is conducting its academic activities with a total of three faculties including two more faculties called Food Science and Technology and Fisheries.

Research

Regular research projects are conducted at the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. In 2016, a team of researchers from Sivasur succeeded in determining the sex of fancy birds with the help of DNA sexing technology. This is the first success in this technology in Bangladesh. Earlier, a lot of money and time had to be spent on determining the sex and sending bird samples abroad. In a project worth Rs 3.65 crore, the Sivasu research boat was launched into Kaptai Lake. In this research boat, 12 researchers will be able to work together. There are also good arrangements to stay here. The research project was launched to find out the reasons why carp are declining in Kaptai Lake.

Covid-19

Sivasu unveiled the genome of the virus in the 2020 Coronavirus epidemic. Research activities were carried out jointly with the Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases and Bangladesh Jute Research Institute. Genetic similarities with the virus were found in four countries.

Main campus

All the administrative functions of the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University are conducted on the main campus. The main campus has two separate halls for students. One is the heroic freedom fighter MA Hannan Hall and the other is Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Student Hall. There are also administrative buildings, Yusuf Chowdhury building, Shaheed Minar, and some other buildings. There are various facilities including Anatomy Museum, Fisheries Museum.

Fisheries Museum

This fish museum was built in 2016 at the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. It was inaugurated by the then Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid. It is located on the ground floor of the administrative building covering an area of ​​two and a half thousand square feet. 200 freshwater fish of native species have been collected from ponds, beels, and rivers in different parts of the country including Karnafuli, Halda, Kaptai Lake of Rangamati, Haor of Sylhet, Pabna canal. Among the freshwater fish are endangered species like Kajli, Rani, Gutum, Khalisha, Dhela, Rita, Madhupada, Foli, Baim, Mahashol, Rui, Katla, Kalibaus, Mrigel, Hilsa, Vyada, etc. And 150 species of marine fish have been collected from Chittagong and Cox's Bazar. These include Coral, Camilla, Maitta, Surma, Chanda, Bishtara, Tara, Devil Ray, Hammer Shark, Shapla Pata, Remora, and other species of fish. Next to each fish will be mentioned its scientific, local, and general names and characteristics. These fish have been stored as well in numerous glass jars in two rooms. There is also an 80 cubic foot aquarium here. Which is an attempt to show aquatic ecology.

Museum of Physiology

It is the first physiology museum in the country. The museum was built in 2016 under the University Grants Commission's HECAP project. The Department of Anatomy and Histology of the University oversees the museum. Horses, cows, deer, camels, ducks, goats, sheep, pigeons, crocodiles, snakes, lizards, pigs, ostriches, and monkeys are preserved in this museum. There are 30 stuffed animals, 20 animal models, 500 specimens of formaldehyde, 2000 different types of bones, 3000 different slides, and stills of 30 scientists. Some dried soft limbs have also been preserved in the museum.

Cox's Bazar Outreach Campus

Construction of the campus began in December 2015. The campus is located in the Darianagar area adjacent to Cox's Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid laid the foundation stone of the campus.

Hathazari Research and Farm-Based Campus

The campus is located in the Hathazari area of ​​Chittagong with an area of ​​about 10 acres. The government dairy farm is located next to this campus. Students and researchers will be able to work hand in hand on this campus. Work on the campus was started at a cost of about Rs 200 crore. Two faculties will be opened here. One is the Faculty of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, the other is the Faculty of Environmental Science. The campus of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (Sivasu) is located in Khulshi, an elite area of ​​Chittagong city, a wonderful meeting place of mountains, rivers, and seas.
