History of Rabindra SarobarIn May 1956, the dhakuria lake was named Rabindra Sarobar after Rabindranath Tagore, a prominent Bengali writer and Nobel laureate. Later, some recreation centers such as kindergartens, gardens and theaters were built around the lake. Nazrul Mancha has been established here in the name of Kazi Nazrul Islam. The lake was added to the National Lake Conservation Project in 2003. In the early 1920s, the Calcutta Improvement Trust (KIT), responsible for the development of the Calcutta metropolitan area, acquired 192 acres of aquatic land. Their goal was to make the area habitable - developing roads, leveling the surrounding land, and creating lakes and gardens. At this time the work of digging a large lake began.

Statues of Rabindranath are placed between the lake and the stadium. At present this lake area is one of the popular recreation centers in the whole of Kolkata. The area of the main lake is 63 acres. The rest is covered with vegetation. Some trees are more than a hundred years old. A partial tree census in 2012 collected data on about 50 different species and numbers. Many migratory birds come to this lake in winter. Although at present their number has come down a lot due to pollution. There are also different species of fish in the lake. Fishing is strictly forbidden here. In the morning, many people walk in the open air on the shores of this lake. Many people also come to offer prayers at sunrise. During the day, the lake is bustling with forest-dwelling families, tourists, young lovers and jaggers. In 2012, a gallery for replacement artifacts run by the Calcutta Improvement Trust was built in an abandoned water house area inside the lake. The locals call it the Gallery of the Thakurs .
