Jagannath University is one of the top public universities in Bangladesh. Though the University came into being in the year 2005 it is not a new institution at all.

Jagannath University is one of the top public universities in Bangladesh. Though the University came into being in the year 2005 it is not a new institution at all. This institution has a history of more than 150 years. The Journey of this university started in the year 1858 when Dhaka Brahma School was founded in 1858 by Dinanath Sen, Prabhaticharan Roy, Anathbandhu Mallik, and Brajasundar Kaitra. The Zamindar of Baliadi Kishorilal Chowdhury renamed it as Jagannath after his father's name. The Current Vice-chancellor is Mijanur Rahman.

Location

Jagannath University is located at Chittaranjan Avenue (9-10), in the Southern part of Dhaka. The famous Buriganga River is close to this university. It was raised to a second-grade college in the year 1884. Google map: click here

History of this prestigious institution

Jagannath College was started with around forty-eight students only. Raja Manmath Roy Chowdhury who was the Zamindar of Santosh, Tangail, affiliated the Pramath Manmath College of Tangail with Jagannath College. It was considered one of the best institutions in Dhaka even then. The college was taken over by the government in 1968.


The honors and Masters Programmes were opened in 1975. In the same year; it was upgraded to a postgraduate college. The intermediate level programs were closed in the year 1982 and the evening shift was started in 1992. Bangladesh government transformed the college into a university in 2005 by passing a bill named ' Jagannath University Act-2005'. The students and teachers of the college took part actively in the Language movement of 1952, the mass movements of 1969, and also in the Bangladeshi liberation war of 1971.

Halls

The University has 12 halls in different areas of old Dhaka. Many new academic buildings are planned to construct. Jagannath University has planned to construct a new campus near keraniganj in an approximate area of 200 acres for the students to offer world-class infrastructure facilities.

Cyber center

The students and teachers have access to an advanced cyber center inside the university by which they are connected with the cyber world free of cost.


Cafeteria

Jagannath University has a cafeteria where students can have delicious foods at a reasonable price. Different food items are offered there for the students and the teachers. Also, there is a common room for the female students.

Transport Facility

As Jagannath University is a Non-Resident Public university, they offer transport facilities for the students, staff, and teachers. A lot of Buses and micro-buses are there to serve.

Library

A huge library is situated in JNU for the students and teachers. More than 20000 books, many journals, and manuscripts can be found in the library. Moreover, E-Book facilities are also available there. At various festivals, JNU students decorate their University where many cultural programs are celebrated.
