On 5 September 1971, a five-member standing patrol team led by Nur Mohammad was sent to Goalhati village in Sutipur. At around 9.30 am, the Pakistani army surrounded the patrol and started firing heavily. The freedom fighters kept trying to rescue the petrol. Birshreshtha Nur Mohammad continued to face the enemy with Nannu Mia, a soldier wounded in the enemy's bullets. At one point, he was severely wounded by an enemy mortar. Injured, Nur Mohammad continued to carry the rifle alone until his comrades reached safety. Wounded Nur Mohammad was captured by the invading forces and brutally killed. Later, his comrades-in-arms recovered his body from a bush beside the battlefield and buried him at Kashipur in Jessore on the Bangladesh-India border.

After the independence of Bangladesh, in recognition of Nur Mohammad's immense heroism, bravery and patriotism in the war of independence, the government of Bangladesh awarded him the title of Bir Shrestha. To protect his memory, the Government of Bangladesh has set up a trust at his birthplace and the Birshreshtha Shaheed Noor Mohammad Sheikh Library & Memorial Museum.
