Bajra Shahi Mosque, also known as the Taj Mahal of Bangladesh by the local people is a spectacular monument situated in Noakhali. It is named after the Bajra village under Sonaimuri Upazila. The inscriptions on the central doorway depict its foundation in 1741 -42 AD. Jamindar Amanullah built a large tank in front of his house covering 30 acres of land. The mosque is built on the bank of this now-dead tank. It was built during the reign of the Mughal emperor Muhammed Shah. The emperor requested the famous alim Hazrat Mawlana Shah Abu Siddique to be the imam of this graceful mosque. He accepted the request and became the first imam of this historical mosque. Since then his heirs are still carrying out the responsibility. Bajra Shahi Mosque has 116 feet in height and 74 feet in width. The 3 domes are around 20 feet each. The middle dome is relatively longer. The base foundation of this is also 20 feet. There are 3 doors to enter the mosque. The graves of Zamindar Amanullah, his brother Sanaullah and their mother are also at the back of the mosque. The mosque is thankfully well preserved over the years. As inscribed on the main door both in Persian and Bangla, the mosque was refurbished in 1909.
