Naming history There are several opinions as to why this district is called Lalmonirhat.

- In the nineteenth century, when excavation work was underway to build the Bengal Doers railway line, workers saw red stones under the mud here. Since then the name of this place has been 'Lalmoni'.
- According to another opinion, the name of the woman whose land was acquired by the British Railways was Lalmoni. In recognition of his contribution, the people of the area named the place 'Lalmoni'.
- Another view is that in 1783, a woman peasant leader named Lalmoni, along with Nuruldin, sacrificed her life to fight against the British troops and zamindars to establish the rights of the common peasants. Since then the name of this place is 'Lalmoni'.
District background Lalmonirhat subdivision was inaugurated on 1 February 1984 by the then Adviser (Minister) for Social Welfare and Women's Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh, Dr. ShafiaKhatun. Later, on 18 March 1984, LalmonirhatSadar Thana was declared as a 'sub-district'. As a result, the number of 'sub-district' under Lalmonirhat district is 5; Patgram, Hatibandha, Kaliganj, Aditmari, and LalmonirhatSadar. At that time, Chhinai, Rajarhat, and Gharialdanga unions of LalmonirhatSadar police station were connected with the adjoining Kurigram district, the number of unions in the newly formed Lalmonirhat district was 41 and the number of municipalities was
1. Moreover, the area of the Lalmonirhatcitysub-district is 104 square miles. After 1985, Dahagram and Angarpota enclaves were considered as a separate union of Patgram'sub-district' and Union Parishad was inaugurated here on 19 August 1989, bringing the number of unions in Lalmonirhat district to 42. The first office of the Deputy Commissioner was on the site of the former office of the Diabetic Association, Lalmonirhat. At the end of 1986, the Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner's Office was shifted to the present MajidaKhatun Government Women's College. It was relocated to its present location in mid-June 1988. On January 16, 1990, the then Deputy Commissioner's Office and Collectorate building was inaugurated by the then President Lt. J.H. M. Ershad.
