Mahatma Gandhi is renowned for the non-violent freedom movement to free the Indian subcontinent from the British Empire. The pioneer entered the Jayag, a village of Noakhali as an envoy of a peace mission. To honor his arrival the place he lived is now standing as a memorial complex- the Gandhi Ashram. In 1947 when the subcontinent was on the verge of freedom suddenly communalism started spreading everywhere dividing and killing people. It reached Noakhali also. To stop the spread of this poison and bring harmony Mahatma Gandhi reached here. First, he entered the Chaumuhani railway station and arrived in the Jayag village on January 29, 1948. He was invited by Zamindar Hemanta Kumar, a local lawyer and the first barrister of this person to live in his house. Hemanta Kumar donated his house and lands to propagate Gandhi's ideals. He established the trust and named it Ambika Kaliganga Charitable Trust. In 1985, the trust's name was changed to Gandhi Ashram Trust. The Gandhi Memorial Museum was also established in the main building of the ashram. On October 2, 2000, it started its journey to spread the non-violent ideology of Gandhi. The museum contains various rare pictures, books, useful things to remind people about his simple yet tremendously impactful life. The ashram is now nationwide reputed as a service organization.        


How to go

You can take a bus or train from Dhaka to Maijidi or Chowmuhani in Noakhali. There you will get local buses or CNGs moving toward Ramganj. They stop at Jayag Bazar. Then take a rickshaw or walk to Gandhi Ashram. The Gandhi Memorial Museum is open to all visitors every Monday to Saturday.       Google map: click here
