Incredible Bangladesh: The History Behind The National Flag of Bangladesh

From its inception in 1949 in the territory called the “ East Pakistan”, the Awami League was the expression of Bengali nationalism. The Pakistani military ruler suspended the National Assembly, following the elections that the League won in December 1970. The Awami League's opposition resulted in a Bangladesh national flag being established for the Bengali homeland. Much like Pakistan, Bangladesh's national flag is dark green.   This is a sign of most people's Islamic faith. Bengalis, however, have a recognized secular state and have thus established green as a symbol of the rich and diverse biodiversity and of the optimism of the youths.

History of the “National Flag of Bangladesh”

Pakistan Dominion was officially established on 14 August 1947, including West and East Pakistan (Eastern Bengal Province). A Chief Minister of the Province of East Bengal, Sir Frederick Chalmers Bourne was elected Governor of East Bengal, and Khawaja Nazimudin (ML) was appointed on 14 August 1947. The National Flag of Bangladesh is built on the flag of 1971 which had a yellow map of the country within the red disk, which was the same during the Bangladesh Liberation War.

This map was taken out of the flag in 1972. One explanation was the complexity of correctly showing the map on both sides of the flag. The civil enchantment and marine enchantment place it either in the billet of a red or white region. On 6 June 1970, in room 108, Iqbal Hall (now Sergeant Zahurul Haq Halls), Dhaka University, the first flag was designed and rendered by a group of student leaders and Swadheen Bangla Nucleus’s members namely Kazi Aref Ahmed, ASM Abdur Rab, Shahjahan Siraj, Manirul Islam, Swapan Kumar Choudhury, Quamrul Alam Khan Khasru, Hasanul Hall.

The National Flag of Bangladesh was changed on 13 January 1972. The chart was moved from the middle and the red disk transferred to the hoist. The red in the middle symbolizes Bangladesh's bloodshed in the war of Bangladesh.     On 17 January 1972, Bangladesh's national flag was officially approved. It comprises a red album on top of a green field (similar to the flag in Japan). The red circle is partially obscured to the lift so the flag appears centered. The record reflects the sun rising on Bangladesh and the blood of all those who perished for Bangladesh's liberation. The greenfield represents Bangladesh's country of liveliness and Bangladesh's everlasting youth.

Flag Design

The design of the National Flag of Bangladesh was traced first on a map by  Hassanul-Haq Inu, Yousuf Salahuddin Ahmed, and Enamul Haq, of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) at Enamul's Room (312) in Quaid-I Azam Hall (now the Sher-E-Bangla Hall), EPUET (now the BUET Hall). Later the map was created by Shib Narayan Das in the red circles. The Flag was designed to eliminate the star and crescent which were considered symbols of West Pakistan by student leader S.M. Abdur Rab, then Vice President Dhaka Students' Union ( DUCSU).

The national flag design is as follows, according to the Bangladeshi government specifications:

  • The flag shall be green and rectangular in bottles and will measure 10:6 in length and 10:6 in width, with a red circle in the center approximately.

  • The red circle has a fifth radius of the flag length. Its center, and the horizontal dividing line through all of the middle of its breadth, shall be positioned at the crossroads of the perpendicular from the nine-twentieth part of its length.

  • Procion Brilliant Green H-2RS 50 parts per 1000 will be the green base of the flag. Procion Brilliant Orange H-2RS 60 parts per thousand will be the red circular component.
  • Flag size depends on the size of the building.
  Display
