Pride of Bangladesh: Bangladesh National Cricket Team Introduction

The Bangladesh Cricket Board administers the Bangladesh Men's National Cricket Team, usually known as The Tigers (BCB). Including Test, One-Day International (ODI) and T20 International (T20I) rank, it is a full part of the International Cricket Council (ICC). It performed its first Test match versus India in Dhaka in November 2000, and became the tenth Test-playing country.

The history of Bangladesh Cricket has been described following:   1780 It is known that, in Calcutta (Currently Kolkata), a major city of Bengal, arranged cricket began in India. To establish the Calcutta Cricket Club, early English foreigners banded together. The earliest form of this club can be identified in the 48th issue of the Hicky's Bengal Gazette, dated Saturday December 16 to Saturday December 23, 1780, where the newspaper announced that the Calcutta Cricket Club Gentlemen were going into the wind and getting ready to take the field for a very successful campaign (sic).   The Calcutta Cricket Club appears senior to the Marylebone Cricket Club, which was founded in 1787, with its tentative year of birth at 1780, by a strong gap of seven years. The London-based MCC, which was the governing body of cricket until a few years ago, still retains an eminent place in the cricket world.

1792

Englishmen who were living in Barrackpore and DumDum districts played a cricket match (Source: February 23, 1792, the Madras Courier). In all probability, this unique cricket match was played on the "maidan" opposite the Raj Bhavan. The theory is based on the reason why a scorecard from another match played in January 1804 persists to convey to us that teams of Old Etonians and Calcutta Cricket Club battled on the same ground.   By the by, the year 1792 is officially recognised as the establishment date for the Calcutta Cricket Club by the Wisden cricket almanac, allowing it the oldest surviving cricket club just outside of the British Isles.

1926

(Unofficial) On the last day of 1926, test cricket arrived at Eden Gardens in Calcutta with Arthur Gilligan leading the MCC team; India was not yet an official test country. At the behest of the Calcutta Cricket Club, MCC arrived and one of its key patrons was the Bengal Gymkhana.

1934

In India, the Ranji Trophy, named after Ranjitsinhji, the prominent Indian cricket player, starts.

 1935

In the second Ranji Trophy, the first Bengal team participated.

1947

After the partition of Bengal in 1947, domestic cricket matches were played in four leagues in Pakistan. From 1954 through 1968, regional East Pakistani teams regularly participated in the first-class Quaid-e-Azam trophy.

1955-1969

In Dhaka respectively 1955 and 1969, seven international test matches with Pakistan competing as the host team were played.   In January 1955, between Pakistan and India, the first test was held. The match began on the first day of the year. Then, the newly constructed Dhaka Stadium had a maximum capacity of 15,000 supporters. The full house audience gave a standing ovation to both the captains, Abdul Hafeez Kardar and Vinoo Mankad, as they stepped out to toss, and by an old adherent of Dhaka cricket. The match had been drawn.   The very next match between Pakistan and New Zealand was held at the Dhaka Stadium from November 7 to 12 of the same year. His second test century was achieved by legendary batsman Hanif Mohammad (103). In addition, with his career best bowling figures of 6 for 21, his fellow countryman Khan Mohammad returned.   This match ended in a draw as well.   In March 1959, the third test was played at the Dhaka Stadium involving Pakistan and the West Indies. Pakistan registered their only Test win at Dhaka by 41 runs in the low-scoring match, mainly due to their well known fast bowler Fazal Mahmood, who took 12 wickets, six in each innings, for 100 runs.

Therefore Australia came under Richie Benaud's leadership in November of the same year and beat Pakistan by eight wickets. That is also the only Test loss for Pakistan in Dhaka. In January 1962, between Pakistan and England, the fifth Test at Dhaka Stadium was held. Though its match ended in a draw, it was a personal milestone for Hanif Mohammad, who earned centuries (111 and 104) in both innings.   In February 1969, after seven years, the next match involving Pakistan and England was also conducted. The involvement of all-rounder Basil D'Oliveira, who recorded an undefeated 114 in the first session, was the most significant aspect of the match.   The last, but not least, test was performed in November of the same year between Pakistan and New Zealand. In that match, Kiwi skipper Glen Turner battered a century (110) which concluded in a draw as well.

1972

The Cricket Control Board of Bangladesh is created. Near after, in Dhaka and Chittagong, a cricket league started. It's a slow start, with other issues in the war-torn nation taking priority. The Dhaka (then "Dacca") stadium was still in d early in 1975 In February 1969, after seven years, the next match involving Pakistan and England was also conducted.

The Dhaka (then 'Dacca') stadium was also in poor condition early in 1975, the square having sunk many inches and the shell-torn Press Club.

1974-75

In the world, a national level cricket tournament begins. At the district level, the 1st division and 2nd division cricket leagues begin. National Youth Cricket, Inter-university Cricket, College & School Cricket, Shahid Smriti Cricket, Damal Summer Cricket and Star Summer Cricket were among the other tournaments organized.

1976-77

Whither Bangladesh? written by Robin Marlar A detailed overview of the state of affairs of Bangladesh cricket and a desire to see Bangladesh on the international scene. After this foreign exposure, Bangladesh Cricket Board officials became more alert and excited.   The acting secretary of the Bangladesh Cricket Control Board, Reza-e-Karim, wrote to the International Cricket Council (then called the International Cricket Conference) after the termination of the 1975-76 domestic season, demanding ICC membership status for Bangladesh. The ICC answers that the BCCB should invite the Marylebone Cricket Club and that its decision is based on the post-tour report of the MCC.

Reza-e-Karim drafted the BBC's first constitution and invited the MCC to Bangladesh in May 1977. In June 1976, at an ICC conference, Bangladesh's membership was addressed. Once the MCC tours Bangladesh, the meeting agrees to finalize the membership status of Bangladesh.   The MCC arrived in Dhaka on December 27, 1976 for its first Bangladesh tour and helped create the optimism; the reflective match in Dhaka was attended by over 40,000 spectators.   On 26 July 1977, Bangladesh became a member of the I.C.C. The BCCB is requesting the MCC's coaching assistance. The MCC is sending its first international cricket coach, an Englishman named Robert Jones, to Bangladesh.

1978

Sri Lanka, which is not yet a test team, tours Bangladesh in January.   The Deccan Blues, an Indian squad of renowned first-class cricketers, toured Bangladesh in February for a three-day match against the BCCB XI. The MCC will arrive in Bangladesh for the second time in December on a tour that lasts until January 14, 1979.

1979

The first ICC trophy in England is awarded to Bangladesh. Bangladesh won matches against Malaysia and Fiji.

1980

Pakistan tours Bangladesh in January for a 2-day Chittagong match and a 3-day Dhaka seal-out match. The crowd's misconduct towards Pakistani players unexpectedly put an end to the Chittagong game and the tour.

1983

A team from West Bengal visited Bangladesh in March, 1983. Bangladesh will follow up with a trip to the Indian state in December.

1984

Bangladesh hosted its first ever Southeast Asia Cup in January 1984; Singapore and Hong Kong participated. In the final, Bangladesh will defeat Hong Kong to win the trophy. Team Bangladesh is visiting Kenya for the first time in February. Bangladesh is hosting a series of cricket matches with Pakistan's PIA and India's Hyderabad Blues after returning from Kenya in late February.

1985

For a three-day match in Dhaka, the Sri Lankan test team tours Bangladesh in March.   Bangladesh will take part in the Second Asia Cup in Sri Lanka in March 1986 and play its first ever one-day international match facing Pakistan (Bangladesh was still not a full member of ICC). Bangladesh players are granted international exposure by the tournament.   Bangladesh will be traveling to England in June 1986 to take part in the third ICC trophy.   Bangladesh will be visiting Pakistan for the first time later in the year.

1988

Bangladesh participates and wins the second trophy in South-East Asia in January, beating Hong Kong. In October-November 1988, the Third Asian Cup took place in Bangladesh with the participation of India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, as well as the host country.   The first Under-19 Asian Cup was hosted by Bangladesh in December 1989.

1990

In January and February, the Deccan Blues, captained by Syed Kirmani, toured Bangladesh. Pyjama cricket arrived in Bangladesh on February 4, 1990, when the first ever day-night match was played between BCCB U-25 and Deccan Blues in Dhaka Stadium.   A team from Denmark toured Bangladesh in February 1990.   Pakistan and India took part in a two-match series in March of 1990. A shocking absentee is Bangladesh, the host country.   In April 1990, Bangladesh took part in the Sharjah Australasia Cup and participated for the first time in group matches versus New Zealand and Australia.

1992

Bangladesh participates in the third South East Asia Cup in June and wins the trophy by beating Hong Kong again.   In December 1992, the first SAARC cricket tournament was hosted by Bangladesh. But with two matches to go, the tournament comes to an abrupt end as tensions grow in Dhaka following the incident at the Babri mosque.

1993

Karachi Airport Gymkhana team visited Bangladesh in March-April, 1993.

1994

In the fifth ICC Trophy, Bangladesh participated and failed to qualify for the semifinals.

1997

The sixth ICC trophy in Malaysia is won by Bangladesh. Bangladesh is also a permanent member of the ICC with the right to play internationals for one day.

2000

On 26 June, Bangladesh achieved the status of a testing country. Bangladesh's inaugural test match against visiting India takes place in Dhaka on 10-14 November 2000

2004

In December, with a 15-run victory over World Cup Runners-up India at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh's team won its 100th ODI with a 15-run success over World Cup Runners-up India at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka. Also, after destroying Pakistan in the 1999 World Cup in England and upsetting Zimbabwe in March 2004, it was only their third win against a Test-playing country.

2005

In 2005 Bangladesh played 3 ODI and 2 test matches against Sri lanka.Meanwhile Srilanka won all the test and ODI matches that time. Bangladesh also toured to England that year where Bangladesh played against Australia and England.Bangladesh won only one match on that tour against Australia.

2006-07

Scotish national cricket team toured to bangladesh and lost 3 ODI matches against bangladesh on that season.   The indian cricket team toured to bangladesh for 2 test matches and three ODI matches in 2007.This brings india 2 wins and 1 draw in ODI.And also 1 win and 1 draw in test. Mashrafi bin Murtaja got player of the match prize for the 1st test match of that series.   In this year bangladesh also perticipated in 2007 cricket world cup.And got the highest achievement for the very first time by making a place on super eight stage.   Bangladesh cricket team also made a tour to New Zealand this year.

 2010

In the Bangladesh cricket nation, the series involving Bangladesh and New Zealand will forever be known for being labeled a "Banglawash". A series where the competitor was swept clean by Bangladesh , having won all matches.   What the TV commentators began to say after Bangladesh won the One Day International Series 4-0, caught up with the rest of the media and fans, and remained one of Bangladesh's greatest cricket successes, particularly in 2010. The victory was all the sweeter, provided that when the Tigers beat the Kiwis on home ground, Shakib Al Hasan was also not part of the team and it took a solid team effort.

2011

This was a special world cup for Bangladesh cricket, mainly because it would be hosted mutually and they had the privilege of hosting the launch event. It was a magnificent ceremony that wonderfully represented the country's elegance and history and remains one of the best opening ceremonies for sporting events till this day.   Even so, the results on the ground for the Tigers was indeed a mixed bag, as they did lose the opening game versus India by a wide margin and were also discarded against West Indies and South Africa for poor totals.   The result against West Indies was really bad that fans threw stones on the West Indies team bus, but those were targeted at the Bangladesh team bus, one of the teams that Bangladesh was supposed to do well against. In Chattogram, their big win arrived against England, whereby Mahmudullah and Shafiul Islam established a brilliant collaboration to win from the jaws of defeat, but the victory was not enough to help Bangladesh qualify for quarter finals.

2012

The Asia Cup in 2012 was a big move in the right direction for Bangladesh cricket after what had been a disappointing 2011 World Cup. It was the one where the team finally began to work well and act as a powerful ODI unit. On the way to the final, they beat the likes of India and Sri Lanka and appeared set for the trophy while they met Pakistan at Mirpur in the final.   As fate would have it, but, that was one of the team and country's biggest heartbreaks as they struggled to score nine runs from the last over bowled by Aizaz Cheema.   The loss hurted more than ever as accomplished batsman Mahmudullah was at the strike in the final over and one would have expected him to score the runs and win Bangladesh's biggest cricketing achievement.

2014

Bangladesh was never a very strong Twenty20 side, and then during the T20I World Cup, it was the lowest of lows for the side, on home ground as well. Whereas the contest began well for them with Afghanistan and Nepal winning, when they met Hong Kong, the real surprise came and they were all out for just 108 runs.   The sum would finally be chased down by Hong Kong and it would go down as the most humiliating moments in the history of cricket in Bangladesh. After this, to finish bottom of their table, Bangladesh lost all their second group phase matches versus West Indies, India, Pakistan and Australia.   In reality, in 2014, Bangladesh performed 10 T20I's and lost seven, winning two with one game washed out, in the shorter version of the game, a truly unmemorable year for the team.

2015   While New Zealand was whitewashed twice by Bangladesh in a one-day series at home, defeating Pakistan 3-0 in 2015 was unique. As Bangladesh was part of Pakistan and defeating them is often regarded as special, a lot has to do with the past. In change, Azhar Ali was heading a new-look Pakistan team. Obviously, Bangladesh were the better side and proceeded to win the 3-0 match.   Not just that, but during the first test they also moved on to keep putting up a brave fight, with the openers Tamim and ImrulKayes bringing up a structure for the first wicket for a triple-century.   This was the year when the Tigers' development was well and truly happening.

It all began with the World Cup, where Bangladesh flourished by kicking out England for the very first time in its history and making the quarter finals of the championship.   They would then reply back on India, Pakistan and even South Africa at home with ODI session wins and really found themselves as a powerful figure at home. It was a side prepared to take on any team at home and defeat them, led by Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, including the presence of Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah.   Then, together with the swashbuckling batting of Soumya Sarkar, there was the emergence of fast bowlers Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed, and Bangladesh had a squad with an outstanding combination of youth and experience. That's the year when Bangladesh actually stopped being labeled as minnows or underdogs by the cricketing world and considered them as an outstanding ODI side, able to beat everyone at home.

2016

While the ODI contest versus England at home was a frustrating one that Bangladesh lost, Mehidy Hasan Miraz put another star in the making in 2016, after the peak of the series wins versus India, Pakistan and South Africa, Bangladesh cricket. With the new ball for the home side, the off-spinner was deadly and created all sorts of problems for the English batsmen.   Though Bangladesh lost its first Chattogram test after coming agonizingly close to victory, they ensured that the powerful English team in Mirpur had been beaten.   Batting first, on a turning field, Bangladesh scored 220 in which only Tamim Iqbal (104) and Mominul Haque (66) added to the bat before the first huge collapse from 171-1 to 220 all out. In response, England then ended up scoring 244 and took a tiny but useful 24-run lead.

Bangladesh settled in again from there as Tamim Iqbal (40), Imrul Kayes (78), Mahmudullah (47) and Shakib Al hasan (41) all slotted in with the bat to score 296 and set a respectable target of 273 runs for England. England cruised with Captain Alastair Cook and Ben Duckett in response, both hitting fifties and forming a partnership of 100 runs.   But then Miraz and Shakib stepped in and the pair started to make the ball speak as the English batsmen were perplexed and hoodwinked and crumbled all out in a session of 164. And including Bangladesh's biggest achievement in Test cricket until then, the win was guaranteed.

2017

After having a good World Cup in 2015, Bangladesh had a point to show in the international arena also with their growing popularity in ODIs. Much of that was accomplished in England in the Champions Trophy in 2017, but for the Tigers, the tournament did not start well.   They lost the first match against England and, if rain hadn't interfered and split the points between both teams, they might have missed the second match versus Australia too. A twisty fight was the third match against New Zealand so both teams had advantage over the other at various points in the match.   The Kiwis seemed set for a total of 300-plus, and thereafter Mashrafe put Mosaddek Hossain into part-time bowler and he grabbed Neil Broom, Jimmy Neesham and Corey Anderson's main wickets to thwart the flow of runs and hold New Zealand after 50 overs to 265-8.

In response, in the first ten overs, Bangladesh were mostly out of the game, dropping Tamim Iqbal for a duck whereas Soumya Sarkar managed only three and Sabbir Rahman discarded for eight. Bangladesh was 12-3, and when Mushfiqur Rahim was out for 14 and Bangladesh fell to 33-4, things got even worse.   And thereafter, as Shakib achieved 114 and Mahmudullah managed 102 to take the team to 257 before Shakib was dismissed, Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah established one of the best partnerships ever in Bangladesh cricket history. Mahmudullah maintained that, along with Mosaddek, the sufficient runs were managed to take the Tigers to their first ever Champions Trophy semifinal.

2018

Whereas the men have participated and lost every single time in several Asia Cup finals, but are yet to capture an Asia Cup, the women have already shown that it's done. In a close contest in the final, they beat India to enable Bangladesh cricket attain its inaugural trophy in a multi-team tournament.   On the way to the final, Bangladesh had to beat higher-ranked Sri Lanka and Pakistan even while they had lost in the group phases against India. Salma Khatun and co held India down to a score of 112-9 in 20 overs in the final, nevertheless.

In response, Bangladesh regularly lost wickets, but did not cause them to be bogged down and the demand rate never went too high. With Rumana Ahmed and Sanjida Islam batting, nine runs were needed in the last over. Sanjida takes the first ball off a single, but then in the next, Rumana managed a boundary to make it four runs required from four balls.   In the third ball, Rumana took one single to make it three out of three needed. But then, in the next two balls, Sanjida and Rumana were out and the formula was two runs needed from the last ball that Jahanara Alam managed to score and record a remarkable victory.   Bangladesh National Cricket team has a remarkable history of ups and down. A long way yet to go.Our good wishes will always be with the team.
