Buddha Dordenma is one of the largest Buddha statues in the world. The height of the statue is 54 meters and is one of the most sought-after tourist attractions in Bhutan. The throne where this massive Buddha Statue Dordenma sits upon is a large meditation hall. There are other small statues surrounding the arena which are made of copper and coated in gold. You can enjoy the view of the whole city from the top of it. National Memorial Chorten is one of the tourist favorites in Thimphu. ‘Chorten’ translates as ‘seat of faith,’ and this monument in the south-center of Thimphu is a large stupa containing a number of Buddhist teachings, paintings, and scriptures. This was built to “represent the mind of the Buddha.” You can know how Bhutanese people are preserving their unique and sophisticated culture while embracing modernity. The Royal Takin Preserve which is also called the Motithang Takin Preserve is located in Motithang, Thimphu. This national animal of Bhutan looks like a cross between a cow and a goat and is very cute and unique. Also, they have a nice trail laid out around the preserve. This will give you a feeling of a tiny hike through a forest. You can hear the sounds of a stream gurgling nearby.


TashichhoeDzongis is located on the bank of the Wangchhu River. The Dzongis surrounded by manicured lawns and gardens. The striking structure houses the throne room and offices of the King, the Secretariat, the Ministries of Home Affairs and Finance. Popularly known as “Fortress of the glorious religion”, Tashichhoe Dzong is also the headquarters for the central monastic body of Bhutan. The local craft market is at a walking distance from the Thimphu clock tower. Go there to buy souvenirs for your loved ones. You can see excellent art and crafts made by authentic Bhutanese craftsmen and women. Do not forget to bargain to get products at best price.

How to reach:

Local taxis are available for hiring in Thimphu. You can book a cab for a day at a reasonable price and visit all the top attractions in one day. The driver will wait for you while you explore and take pictures. Sometimes the drivers can be your most sought-after tour guide in an unknown city.
