Bir Shrestha Flight lieutenant Matiur Rahman was a freedom fighter who took active participation in the liberation war of Bangladesh in the year of 1971. Bangladesh government awarded the highest military award 'Bir Shrestha' to 7 freedom fighters, Flight lieutenant Matiur Rahman is one of them. Matiur Rahman was awarded the highest honor for his valor and bravery. At first, Matiur Rahman was buried in a fourth-class graveyard in the Masrur Airbase situated in Karachi, Pakistan. Later, the Bangladeshi government brought the body of Matiur Rahman to Bangladesh and buried him in Mirpur Shahid Buddhijibi graveyard, Dhaka.

This tomb is located in the Mirpur area of Dhaka city. It is situated in the Shaheed Buddhijibi Graveyard. About Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman. Matiur Rahman was born on 29th October 1941 in Old Dhaka. His paternal village is Motinagar located in the Raipura Upazila of Narsingdi district. Their family consisted of 11 members. Out of 9 siblings, he was the sixth child. The name of his father was Moulavi Abdus Samad and his mother was Sayeda Mobarokunnesa Khatun. He was commissioned as a pilot officer in 1963 from Risalpur P A F College. Then he joined the second squadron as a general duty pilot in Mouripur Airbase. He was promoted to flight lieutenant rank in 1967 and got appointed as a jet flying instructor in 1970.

In 1971, Matiur Rahman came to Dhaka on vacation. After the 25th march, He opened a training camp in Bhairab to train Bengali freedom fighters. He also worked with East Pakistan rifles to deter the occupational forces. Afterward when he returned to Karachi, West Pakistan, He planned to take the control of a fighter jet so that it can be used in the liberation war of Bangladesh. When he tried to take control of the fighter jet from Pakistani forces in mid-air, The plane crashed after wrestling between him and a Pakistani pilot for taking control of the plane. Thus he was martyred. The entry fee There is no entry fee to see his tomb. So anyone can visit it free of charge.

How to go there

From any part of Dhaka city, There are available buses and taxis for going to Mirpur-1, Mazar road. It is located in Shaheed Buddhijibi Graveyard. In the Mirpur area, there are lots of hotels and restaurants so you don't need to worry about food and night stay. Also, there is no fixed timing for visiting during the day.
