UNWTO is a paramount cosmopolitan corporation in tourism, playing major roles in economic development, equitable development, and preservation of the environment.

They also provide leadership and assist in progressive knowledge and tourism guidelines around the globe.

Currently, 159 countries are members of the UNWTO along with 6 Associate members and more than 500 Affiliated members. UNWTO aid regional department for Africa, America, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Middle East, by helping them grow their tourism sector to enhance sustainable economic and social evolution. UNWTO focuses mainly on:   Sustainable Development– is based on tourism that affects the present and future economics of the country, as well as taking into context environmental and communal consequences. Sustainable tourism should also sustain tourist contentment, ensuring they have a wonderful escapade, meanwhile also acknowledging sustainability concerns and encouraging sustainable tourism practices. The followings are also taken into consideration:  

  1. Biodiversity:UNWTO aims to develop tourism that contributes to equal measure, preservation of biodiversity, communal security, and financial stability of the host countries.
  2. Climate Change:UNWTO is devoted to developing tourism by decreasing carbon emission and contributes to reaching international climate goals.
  3. Global Tourism Plastic Initiative:This initiative is taken to reduce, support, and take appropriate steps by tourism parties concerned and is building a global partnership to reduce plastic pollution. Tourism enterprises and alliances from all around the globe are uniting in unison to take an appropriate orderly approach through Global Tourism Plastic Initiative.
  4. Hotel Energy Solution (HES):HES is a project started by UNWTO which provides information, technical support & training to aid Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the tourism and lodging department across the EU in order to soar energy efficiency and renewable energy consumption.
  5. Observatories (INTRO):International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories is a network where the financial, ecological, and communal influence is monitored at the destination level, to ensure sustainability.
  6. One Planet:The One Planet Sustainable Tourism Programme is about meetings the needs of all by utilizing small amount of non-renewable resources, including energy and water, thus reducing pollution.
  7. Small Island Development States: Small Islands are a major tourist attraction for visitation, as a result, they face a lot of constrains economically, environmentally, and on resources. After various conferences taken part by UNWTO, several regional workshops were conducted on coastal and island destinations inhost countries, supplying experiences for developing sustainable coastal and tourism on the island.
      Competitiveness: Information and tactic advice are provided by Tourism Market Intelligence and Competitiveness Sector, to aid tourism destinations. Competitiveness provides strategies for market intelligence, policy and destination management, and product development, to help the tourism sector to achieve a better efficient result.  

Innovative, Investment, and Digital Transformation: UNWTO is oriented towards developing digitalization of tourism in order to upgrade inclusiveness, empower the local community, and coherently manage resources, amongst several other goals of the sustainable development agenda.  

Ethics, Culture, and Social Responsibility:   


  1. Global Code of Ethics for Tourism:
UNWTO believes that tourism can play an important part in people’s lives and the planet. It creates a unique bond between requited understanding and consideration between people and communities.  
  1. Accessible Tourism:
Based on statistics by The World Health Organization, around 15% amongst 1 billion people is considered to live with a disability. UNWTO believes that there should be ease of access for everyone to tourist facilities, commodities, and assistance.  
  1. Tourism and Culture:
UNWTO aids communities to build and fortify cultural tourism policy, schemes, and artefacts with the Sustainable Development Goals.  
  1. Gender and Tourism:
UNWTO is devoted to creating favourable change on women’s lives via tourism development, and as a result, contributing to the attainment of the Fifth Sustainable Development goal – “achieving gender equality and empower all women and girls.”   Tourism plays an important role in people’s lives, communities, countries in many ways for growth, and escalating diversification. UNWTO strongly follows the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism in order for a country to reach its highest potential on tourism on the basis of socio-economic while reducing adverse impacts and promotes tourism as a tool to attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), for lessening poverty and encouraging sustainable development around the globe.
