Lalon Mela: The Festival for the Disciple of Lalon Shah

Bangladesh has become the center of different cultures and communities of people. Many people stay in Bangladesh and follow their cultural and religious beliefs. One of the famous people 'Lalon or Lalon Fakir Shah' was an author, Bengali philosopher, Baul saint, songwriter, and social reformer of British India. he is Mark as the icon of Bengali culture. The culture of Bengal shows the lifestyle and tradition of the Bengali people of Eastern India. The place is now known as Bangladesh, West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam. The Bengal has the history of a very long time with rich cultural aspects. He has inspired Rabindranath Thakur and Kazi Nazrul Islam with his work. He had been holding a different concept and he was not in a belief of top caste and Creed in the society. Lalan was born on 17th October of 17 74 in the Jhenaidah district.  Due to his work, he gained the title of Baul Samrat. Lalon always wanted to remove the barrier of religion and customs. He tried to implement the thinking that the people of every religion would stay in harmony without the binding of the religion. He wanted to show his thinking and effort through the song he has written his lifetime. He had founded his institution that is known as Lalon Akhrah in Cheuriya which is located within a distance of 2 kilometers from the Kushtia railway station. He has a huge number of disciples and they follow his principles.


They are mainly from Bangladesh and West Bengal. Every year on his death anniversary a large number of disciples gather at his institution and show respect to him by discussing his songs and his philosophy for three days. This is widely known as the Lalon Mela. The Lalon Mela is organized two times every year. One is celebrated on the Dol Purnima and the other one is celebrated on the death anniversary of Lalon Shah. A large fair or Mela is being arranged by the disciple, which is continued for the straight three days. On the occasion of Lalon Mela, the whole place is decorated with colorful lights, flowers, and decorative items. The disciple enjoys the three days by singing the Lalon songs. People from different parts of the country join here to engage themselves in the Lalon mela. Due to the occasion of Lalon Mela large number of the rural stall is being set and different types of food and necessary items are being sold which are rare and sometimes not available in the urban areas. The whole program is being monitored by the authority to provide essential security for the devotees. In this way, the devotees celebrate the days overcoming the belief of religion, caste, or creeds.
