Nazrul Jayanti May 24 is the birthday of Kazi Nazrul Islam, the national poet of Bangladesh. The day is celebrated in various schools, colleges, and universities to pay homage to Nazrul and his work. Bengalis all over the world also celebrate this day. On the occasion of Nazrul Jayanti, various cultural organizations organize various programs. These include wreath-laying at the grave of the poet in the morning and recitation of Fatiha, procession, discussion, and cultural program.
The 119th birth anniversary of national poet Nazrul Islam was celebrated on May 25, 2018, at Trishal in Mymensingh for three days. This day is a day of great pride and joy for the people of Trishal. People of all stages in this region waited for the festival "Nazrul Janmajayanti and Nazrul Grameen Mela". Many relatives from far and wide visited and enjoyed the cultural program and Nazrul Grameen Mela.
Kazi Nazrul Islam was born on 24 May 1899 in the village of Churulia, Asansol subdivision, Burdwan district, West Bengal, India. He used to work in a bread shop in Asansol, Burdwan.
In 1914, Kazi Rafizullah Daroga of Kazi Simla village of Trishal in Mymensingh brought the poet Nazrul to Bangladesh. At that time there was no educational institution in Qazi Shimla. He admitted the talented Nazrul in the seventh grade at Darirampur High School (now Nazrul Academy). Arrangements were made for the poet to stay at the house of Bichutia Bepari in Namapara village of Trishal Union.
Every year since 1965, the people of Trishal started celebrating Nazrul's birth anniversary locally. In 1990, the then President Hossain Mohammad Ershad first decided to officially celebrate Nazrul's birth anniversary in Trishal for 7 days. Since then, Nazrul's birth anniversary has been celebrated for three days every year at the national level or organized by the district administration.
At the initiative of the Ministry of Culture, Nazrul Library and Museum has been constructed in the courtyard of Kazi Rafizullah Daroga's house. The bed on which Nazrul used to sleep has been preserved. The Nazrul Memorial Center, Nazrul Institute, and Seminar Room have been constructed in the courtyard of Bichutia Bepari Bari, just one and a half kilometers away from the municipal town. The pond where the poet used to bathe and fish in the pond adjacent to the memorial center has been transformed into a beautiful environment with the paving of the ghat.
The National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam University has been built on the bank of Shukni Beel near Bichutia Bepari's house. It is preserved that the poet used to sit under the banyan tree on the bank of the Shukni Beel and played the flute.
The seventh classroom of Nazrul Academy (formerly Darirampur High School) where Nazrul studied has been preserved. In front of the room, there is a mosaic of Nazrul's utterance written in memory of headmaster Bipin Chandra.
On the three-day Nazrul birth anniversary, innumerable Nazrul-loving devotees, country-renowned poets, writers, intellectuals, Nazrul researchers, and political personalities appear in Trishal. The area became resounded with the footsteps of millions of people and Nazrul music on the Nazrul Mancha.
Relatives and Nazrul devotees flock to the house to enjoy the three-day cultural program, Nazrul Grameen Mela and Book Mela. Everyone visits the poet's childhood memories are intertwined with places of interest such as Kazir Simla Rafiz Ullah Darogar Bari, Bichutia Bepari Bari, Balya Vidyapeeth Darirampur High School.
The cultural organizations of Trishal and Mymensingh pass the busy time with the practice of drama, song, poetry, and dance before the festival.
