Nohkalikai Falls

The waterfall is something which is always mesmerized our eyes nevertheless if you are a nature lover then don’t forget to visit Nohkalikai Falls which is located about seven km away from Cherrapunji as well as it’s the second wettest place on the planet. Nohkalikai name represented by Khasi language which means ‘KaLikai’s Leap’ also it's named after a tragic Khasi legend where Noh KaLikai means "the leap of Likai".

As per the legend, in a village called Rangjyrteh here a woman whose name was Likai had to remarry after her husband and her husband was a porter by profession and died on a trip carrying iron to Sylhet, kalakkhi here ka is the prefix which is given for female gender in kasha, so after her husband died she had to come out for work and she had become a porter herself. She left her infant girl at home whenever she had gone to work. However, she married the second time and the jealous husband killed the infant girl and cooked her meat after throwing away her head and bones. So after realizing this incident kalakkhi jumped from this waterfall and after her death this waterfall called Nohkalikai Falls.

Nohkalikai Falls is the fifth highest waterfall in India which height is 1115 feet or 340 meters. it takes around 40 mins from the Ticket counter to Tip of the Falls. Water flow is abundant in summer, when the flow gives a short flow in winter, white rope prints against the green forest. not only this adventure place don’t give a tourist just a feel of the waterfall but also this place also enjoyable for trekking, camping, bird watching, landscape photography, swimming, and angling. Though there have few fees which have been charged to carry the camera. You can also take a trekking trail to enjoy the place fully. Steps lead part of the way to the base of the waterfall but end midway.

A trekking trail takes you the rest of the way. During the rainy season, a glimpse of Nokake Falls is complicated by the thick cloud cover. The best time to visit Nohkalii Falls is in September and October when the sky is relatively clear. There have so many accommodation systems near cherrapunji which will be suitable for every budget. Enjoyable pork rice which is represents Khasi cuisine you can find out in cherrapunji. Rice cooked without spices only by using oil and vegetables in Sohra Pulao which should not be missed when visiting also you can get Chinese Indian, Punjabi, and Bengali cuisines in Cherrapunji. However, the Khasi version of the kitchens is preferable here.

Recommendations: 

  • Carry food and water at the time of visiting the falls for extended periods. In Cherrapunji,
  • You maybe have to carry an extra fee to take the camera so be clear on this issue.
  • Avoid June, July, and august to visit Nohkalikai Falls
  • Not recommended for children and old persons.
  • plan the trip at Morning or Afternoon Hours cause after 5 pm it gets dark
  How to go:

By Air The nearest airport is located at Shillong which is 80 Km away.

By Train The nearest railway station is also located at Shillong which is 81 Km away

By Road it will take 2 hours from shillong to the falls by private taxi also one can use a shared cab which will take approximately 1 hour 30 mins drive.
